Born as the child of a poor family, Ebul Hasan worked as a shepherd in the village of Harakan at a young age and later engaged in farming.

Ebul Hasan, who also worked as a load carrier for caravans in his youth, was, according to sources, influenced by the Sufism of Beyazid-i Bestami, who had lived in Khorasan a century before him, and served for a while as a tomb keeper at the Bestami lodge. During this period, Ebû'l Hasan attained Sufism and later became one of the greatest spiritual figures of his age.
