According to inscriptions and historians, the foundations of the church were laid in 990 AD by Bagratlı King Sembat II, but after King Sembat died, the church was completed in 1001 by his wife, Queen KATRANİDE. The architect of the church is the master TİRİDAT, who carried out the repairs of the Hagia Sophia Church in Istanbul in the same century.
