Şerefiye Sarnıcı, 428 ve 443 tarihleri arasında Doğa Roma İmparatoru İmparator 2. Theodosius tarafından, Bozdoğan Kemeri (Valens Su Kemeri) vasıtasıyla su depolamasını sağlamak amacıyla inşa edildi.

Belgrad Ormanı ve civarındaki su kaynaklarından, Bozdoğan Kemeri kanalı üzerinden "Nymphaeum", "Zeuksippos Banyoları" ve "Büyük Saray"a su taksimi yapılırken, bu su dağıtma işlemine Şerefiye Sarnıcı'nın yapımı öncülük etti.
