Şerefiye Sarnıcı was built between 428 and 443 by Eastern Roman Emperor Emperor 2. Theodosius in order to provide water storage by means of the Bozdoğan Kemeri (Valens Aqueduct).

While water was distributed from the Belgrad Forest and the water sources around it, via the Bozdoğan Kemeri channel, to the "Nymphaeum," "Zeuksippos Baths" and the "Great Palace," the construction of Şerefiye Sarnıcı pioneered this water distribution process.

The cistern met Istanbul's water needs for centuries together with Binbirdirek Sarnıcı, built in the 4th century, and Yerebatan Sarnıcı, commissioned in the 6th century.

The historic structure, located on Piyerloti Caddesi in Binbirdirek Mahallesi of Istanbul's Çemberlitaş district, was opened to visitors on 24 April 2018 following restoration works.
