It was built in 1865 in the Neo-classical style by Minister of Education Saffet Paşa, and was used for the services of the Ministry of Public Education and İstanbul Darülfünun. While it was serving as Darülfünun (in 1875), the International Painting Exhibition was opened here. During the reign of II. Abdülhamit, it was used as the censorship building. In 1908, it was transferred to Şehremaneti (İstanbul Municipality). From 1908 to 1983, various departments of the municipality served in this building. In 1983, as a result of the joint meeting held by the then Mayor Abdullah Tırtıl and the Board of Directors of the (Türkiye) Journalists' Association (during the Nezih Demirkent period), it was decided that it would serve as the Press Museum. It was restored between 1984-1988 and opened for service on 9 May 1988.
The Türkiye Journalists' Association Press Museum is one of İstanbul's famous culture and art centers. The Press Museum has superior qualities compared to its counterparts in the world. Press museums in other countries are either aimed at press technology or contain works from the world of press and publishing. In addition to this superiority it carries in terms of museology, the Türkiye Journalists' Association Press Museum also fulfills functions in terms of cultural and artistic activities that are not even carried out by the state. Organizing meetings such as conferences and panels, various art activities and different seminars are only a few of the activities of the Press Museum. Consisting of 4 floors, the Press Museum is not only a culture-art center of the Sultanahmet – Çemberlitaş - Beyazıt touristic area, but also a leading source of pride for İstanbul.
In the halls of the Press Museum, it is possible to follow the evolution that press technology has undergone from the beginning to the present day. Among lithography examples, a flat printing machine, rotary type entertype, proof benches, guillotine, old typewriters, telexes, and telephotos, you can take a nostalgic trip free of charge.
