Adam Mickiewicz Müzesi

The house in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, where the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz settled when he came to Istanbul and lived until his death, was opened as a museum on the hundredth anniversary of the poet’s death. Mickiewicz, who came to Istanbul to increase relations with and strengthen the Poles serving the Turks in the Crimean War fought against Russia, stayed in this house with his friends.

In the house, which was a center where Poles gathered during the Crimean War, Adam Czartoryski, who came to Istanbul at the end of the uprising in 1830 among Polish immigrants and founded Polonezköy, the writer T.T. Jez, and Adam Michalowski, who later became Muslim, also lived.

Because of the cholera disease he is thought to have contracted when he visited the patients in the tents in the Kurtuluş district, the poet Adam Mickiewicz died at his home in 1855. The three-story house where the poet lived today carries Mickiewicz’s life full of hardships to the present as a museum. The poet’s symbolic grave is also located in the cellar of the building. The museum is affiliated with the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum.
