Şahinbey National Struggle Museum effectively presents to its guests all aspects of the Gaziantep resistance during the War of Independence. The museum was established with a contemporary museology approach in the twelve-room historic building and the cave beneath it in order to better convey to present and future generations the importance and details of the defense heroically carried out by the people of Antep against the British and French occupation, through which it earned the title of “Gazi”.
The tour route flow of Şahinbey National Struggle Museum was designed chronologically, and visitors entering the museum from the reception section tour the exhibition-presentation areas in the historic building by following the directions. After the exhibition-presentation areas, entry is made into the caves. Upon entering the caves, visitors encounter instant scenes of life from the period, created with mechatronic sculptures and various different compositions. These scenes evoke various emotions in visitors both visually and sensorially. In the caves, areas that were used for various purposes in the periods before the national struggle have also been recreated. For example, the soap workshop is one of them.
Multi-dimensional projection shows and sound effects were used in the recreations. What is aimed in the museum is to present to visitors, with an epic narrative through presentation areas, projection shows, and various touch screens, the resistance epic of Gaziantep, which made all of Turkey proud during the War of Independence, and the spirit of struggle. In the historic building, where documents regarding the defense of Gaziantep are presented in chronological order, many items belonging to the martyrs are exhibited, such as weapon parts belonging to the British and French, and pistols, hunting rifles, swords, daggers, meat cleavers, pickaxes, shovels, and hatchets used by the townspeople.
