The first fortification (all kinds of structures built on land for defense purposes) constructions in Edirne were begun under the supervision of Divan-ı Hümayun translator Hoca İshak Efendi in the face of the Russian occupation in 1829. One of the most important of these structures is Hıdırlık Tabyası, which was also used in the First Balkan War.
