Ceneviz Kalesi and its surroundings, which have survived from the Hellenistic, Roman and Eastern Roman periods to the present day, were registered as an archaeological and natural protected site in 1996 by the decision of the Ankara Council for the Protection of Cultural and Natural Assets. The castle, built with rubble stones, has an entrance gate on the land side and a high tower next to it. Within the castle courtyard, there is a water cistern with a diameter of 5.30 meters, known today as a wishing well, which met the water needs in that period.
Ceneviz Kalesi, which remains from the Genoese who established trade colonies in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and Northern Europe between the 11th and 15th centuries and has become the symbol of Akçakoca, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2013 under the name “Fortresses and Walled Settlements from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea on the Genoese Trade Routes”.
Historic Ceneviz Kalesi is one of the rare centers in our region where it offers the aesthetics of history and nature together with its elevated position above the sea and its seafront location. The beaches to its west and east have blue flags and are distinctive for our region. One of these beaches, called Yalıyarlar, is also referred to as seal rocks because it contains caves located along the coast. In addition to the beaches of Ceneviz Kalesi and its historical texture, it is also the most preferred picnic and recreation area of Akçakoca.
