Kökeni antik dönemlere kadar inen kale Bizanslılar tarafından onarılmıştır. Evliya Çelebi kaleden bahsederken altıgen biçiminde ve 70 kulesi var der. I. Dünya savaşında çok tahrip görmüştür. Sadece bir gözetleme kulesi ile bitişiğindeki iç liman kalmıştır. Üç katlı olan burcun iki katı mevcuttur. Katlar arasında döner taş bir merdiven vardır. Bu burç şimdi Piri Reisi Müzesi’ne ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Müzede Gelibolulu olduğu bilinen ünlü denizciyi hatırlatacak, tablolar, haritalar, büstler yer almaktadır. Gelibolu Tersanesi’ de buradaki iç limanla bağlantılıydı.
