Kilitbahir Kalesi 1462-63’de Fatih Sultan Mehmet tarafından yaptırılmıştır. Kale-i Sultaniye’nin tam karşısında bir tepenin eteğinde kurulmuştur. Yapı dış kale, iç kale ve ana kule olmak üzere üç kısımdan oluşmaktadır. İç kale 7 katlı üçgen bir kuleden oluşmaktadır. 1541 yılında Kanuni Sultan Süleyman tarafından yaptırılan restorasyon sırasında güney kısmını çevreleyen bir sur duvarıyla dış uçta bir kule (Sarıkule) inşa edilmiştir. Kale tümüyle kaba yontulmuş taşlarla inşa edilmiştir. Açıklık kısımları kiremit kemerli olup kapı ve pencereler beyaz mermerden yapılmıştır.
