Çanakkale’nin varoluş nedeni, boğaz kenarındaki Kala-i Sultaniye günümüzdeki adıyla Çimenlik Kalesi’dir. Kaleyi, Fatih Sultan Mehmet İstanbul’u fethettikten sonra 1462 yılında yaptırmıştır. Piri Reis, Kitab-ı Bahriye’sinde kitabını burada tamamladığından bahseder.Kale, kare planlı bir iç kale ve dış kaleden meydana gelmektedir. İç kalenin girişine konulan antik mermer koltuğa Fatih Sultan Mehmet’in oturarak askerlere hitap ettiği söylenir. Çanakkale Savaşları sırasında 4 adet top kalede savunma görevi yapmıştır. 18 Mart 1915 günü kale özellikle İngiliz gemisi Queen Elizabeth’in yoğun saldırılarına mağruz kalmış ve zarar görmüştür. Günümüzde Deniz Müzesi’nin bir bölümü olarak hizmet vermektedir.
