The reason for Çanakkale’s existence is Kala-i Sultaniye on the shore of the strait, known today as Çimenlik Kalesi. The castle was commissioned by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1462 after he conquered Istanbul. Piri Reis mentions in his Kitab-ı Bahriye that he completed his book here.The castle consists of a square-planned inner castle and an outer castle. It is said that Fatih Sultan Mehmet sat on the ancient marble seat placed at the entrance of the inner castle and addressed the soldiers.

During the Çanakkale Wars, 4 cannons served in the defense of the castle. On 18 March 1915, the castle was subjected in particular to intense attacks by the British ship Queen Elizabeth and was damaged. Today it serves as a part of the Naval Museum.
