The half rock-carved Greek Houses in Güzelyurt, with decorated front facades, constitute some of the finest examples of Cappadocian architecture. The first settlement area of Güzelyurt was the rock spaces around Aya Gregorius Theologos Church in Aşağı Mahalle. Structures were added to the front parts of the rock dwellings with a vaulted covering system. As a result, dwellings with a built front and a rock-carved rear began to be used. In the 19th and 20th centuries, houses were built onto the rock carvings in Yukarı Mahalle.
