Montanizmin ortaya çıktığı merkez, Frigya bölgesinde bulunan "Pepouza" kenti idi. Yazılı kaynaklara göre kent bir Bizans manastırına sahipti. Manastırda, üç katta altmıştan fazla oda, yemekhane, şapel, mutfak, haç şekilli Bizans grafiti, Bizans çanak çömlekleri bulunmuştur. Ayrıca, Ulubey Kanyonunun doğu kısmında bulunan kaynak suyu, Clandras su kemerinin yardımıyla 2,5 km mesafeden, Roma köprüsünün batısında, kanyonun genişlediği alanda bulunan ve büyük bir yerleşim yeri olduğu düşünülen Pepouza kentine getirilirdi.
