The structure is located on Vali Fuat Bey Caddesi (Büyükyol). It is estimated to have been built in the early 19th century on top of the Church of John the Baptist, commissioned by Bishop Nona in 457. As it was the largest church of its period and in the region, it was also called a cathedral. The structure remained in ruins for many years and was at one time used as a power plant. On 28 May 1993, it was repaired and opened for worship as a mosque. The entrance of the mosque is on the west side, and the last congregation area was also made by making use of the narthex (entrance section) of the earlier church. The prayer area is illuminated to a considerable extent by windows.

On the edges of the windows on the structure, there are half-columns remaining from the church and reliefs of intertwined dragons. Because the first church was used as a mosque for a period by Selahaddin Eyyubi, when the structure was converted into a mosque it was referred to by the same name. The mosque was repaired in 2010-2011 by the General Directorate of Foundations.
