It is also known that pottery has been made on the wheel in Avanos since the Hittites. This handicraft has been passed down from tribe to tribe, from father to son, and has survived to the present day. Soft and oily clay soils from the mountains of Avanos and the old beds of the Kızılırmak are sifted and thoroughly kneaded into mud. The desired pottery is made by skillfully shaping the clay on a foot-operated wheel called a çark. The pottery produced in workshops called işlik is first dried in the sun and then in the shade, after which it is carefully fired in kilns fueled with straw and sawdust at temperatures ranging from 800 degrees to 1200 degrees.
