Kesin doğum tarihi bilinmemekle birlikte, doğum yeri olarak Bitlis İli geçmektedir. Medrese eğitimine ilk olarak amcası Hacı Mahmut Efendiden alır.. Muştak Baba bir çok ile giderek bilgiler edindi. Elde ettiği bu bilgileri ise “ASAR” adlı el yazmasında toplamıştır. 1818 tarihinde Bitlis’ten İstanbul’a seyahat ederken Muş’ta konaklama yaptığı esnada kendisini boğdurmuşlardır. Bir rivayete göre de Muştak Baba’yı, zamanın Beylerinden olan Aleaddin Bey tarafından boğdurulmuştur. Başka bir rivayete göre ise Muş’ta yaşayan Yezidiler tarafından öldürülmüştür.
