Thekla, aged 17, influenced by the sermons of St. Paul, one of the apostles of Prophet Jesus, devoted herself to Christianity. While this valuable student of St. Paul was propagating Christianity in Konya and Yalvaç, she was subjected to the pressures of pagans, and when she learned that she would be killed, she fled to Seleucia and hid in a cave that was later converted into a church. From the cave where she took refuge, she spread the Christian faith against the polytheistic religion to the people of the region, and also healed the sick by performing miracles. It is believed that, at a moment when she was again about to be killed, she disappeared in this cave. The cave in which Aya Thekla lived was considered sacred by Christians after her disappearance; until this religion was legalized in A.D. 312, it was used as a secret place of worship. This cave was later converted into a church in the 9th century.
