In the inner courtyard or garden called the summer section, there are spaces that were formerly used as stables and today function as storage. The eyvan is the section where life takes place in summer. The semi-open parts such as the eyvan and arcade, which have an important place in the architecture, were built in such a way as to remain shaded, especially against the western sun. The most important feature of Mardin houses is the stone workmanship. Their doors and windows are decorated with small columns, arches, and various motifs. The central settlement was declared an urban protected site in 1979.
