Kerpe is a small settlement in the Kandıra district of Kocaeli, on the western Black Sea coast. You can reach Kerpe by passing through extremely dense pine forests stretching all the way to the sea.

Its ancient name was Kalpe, and it is an old and important place dating back to the fifth century BC.

Kerpe Bay, a naturally sheltered harbor on the Black Sea coast, was founded in the seventh century by Milesian or Megarian colonists as a base-marketplace (emporion) and port city for the use and protection of Black Sea maritime trade routes.

After the Kingdom of Bithynia, Kerpe became a stopping place for ships during the Roman, Byzantine and Genoese periods. During the Ottoman period, it supplied Istanbul’s need for firewood and charcoal.

One of the most important features of Kerpe, which has a crescent-shaped bay, is its shallow sea reaching up to 150 meters. Although it is on the Black Sea coast, it is not greatly affected by the Black Sea’s famous waves because it is in a bay sheltered from the wind.
