It is known that on the coast of the Marmara Sea, Florya Atatürk Deniz Köşkü is located in Florya, a residential area between Yeşilköy and Küçükçekmece, which in the 19th century was in the position of a modest hunters’ stopover. Gaining importance through Atatürk’s interest in the area, Florya gradually turned into a summer resort.

The pavilion, commissioned for Atatürk from architect Seyfi Arkan, who won the project competition opened by the Istanbul Municipality in 1935, was built as a summer residence on columns driven into the seabed and connected to the shore by a bridge. In the pavilion, which was opened for use on 14 August 1935, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed in June and July of 1936, used the pavilion especially for political and scientific meetings, and hosted some important guests here, including King Edward VIII of England and Madam Simpson.

The pavilion was last used by Atatürk on 28 May 1938, and after his death these structures were used as the summer residence of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey during the periods of İsmet İnönü, Celal Bayar, Cemal Gürsel, Cevdet Sunay, Fahri Korutürk and Kenan Evren.

This group of structures, transferred by the Presidency to the Directorate of National Palaces on 16 September 1988, was turned into the Atatürk Museum after its restoration was completed, furnished with period items in keeping with the style of the pavilion, which had been built with a modern understanding in its time.

Some of the Aide-de-Camp and General Secretariat buildings built on land behind Atatürk Köşkü have not survived to the present day, while the remaining ones were repaired and turned into TBMM social facilities.
