Where is Eğirdir Lake?

Eğirdir Lake is located between the Sultan and Karakuş Mountains and in the middle of the provincial area. Eğirdir Lake, with a north-south length of 50 km and an east-west width varying between 3 and 15 km, collects the waters of a basin of approximately 3.309 km2. Karstic structure played a major role in the formation of the lake. It emerged through the merging of depression troughs located on the main limestone base. The lake is at an altitude of 916 m above sea level, and its average depth is about 12 m. Its maximum depth is 16.5 m near Eğirdir.

There are deep and sheltered bays on the southwestern shores of Eğirdir Lake. Steep rocks and cliffs give these bays very beautiful views. The lake extends from north to south and is fed by underground water sources. These spring waters emerge from various places within the lake. Apart from spring waters, the lake is also fed by nearby springs. The main ones are Kanlı Palamut Spring, which emerges beside Gençali and immediately flows into the lake, Karaot Avlığı Spring located just south of this spring, and Koca Spring and Havutlu Springs emerging from beneath Tırtar.

In Eğirdir Lake, poyraz winds can create dangerous waves. Eğirdir Lake is divided into two parts. The smaller northern section of the lake is called Hoyran Lake, while the southern section is called Eğirdir Lake. Both lakes are connected to each other by the Hoyran Strait. The shores of the lake are generally steep. In the Gelendost and Hoyran areas, where this steepness disappears, there are marshes on the lake shore. In the lake, there are two small islands like an extension of the peninsula on which Eğirdir district is located. One is Can Ada, the other is Yeşilada (Nis). In recent years, taking advantage of the decrease in the lake waters, these islands have been connected to each other and to Eğirdir. There are different types of fish in the lake. The most famous are: Çapak, siraz, çiçek, levrek and sudak.
