Süleymaniye Neighborhood (Old Gümüşhane), located to the southwest of where the current city center is situated, is 4 kilometers from the provincial center. The settlement came under Turkish rule in 1461, when Fatih Sultan Mehmet put an end to the existence of the Trabzon-Pontus Greek State. The city established its settlement and development during the reign of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman. 35 immovable cultural assets such as mosques, churches, baths, bridges and shops have survived to the present day. In addition to being a 3rd Degree Urban and Natural Protected Area, the settlement is also a tourism center.
