Ermeni cemaatinin Ortadoğu'daki en büyük kilisesi konumunda kabul edilen Surp Giragos Ermeni Kilisesi, 16. yüzyılda inşa edilmiştir. 1518 yılında Sen Teodaros Kilisesi’nin camiye dönüştürülmesinden sonra, kiliseye ait mezarlığın içinde Surp Giragos Kilisesi’nin inşa edildiği ifade dilmektedir. Kilise, 1722 yılında dönemin metropoliti Bedros Vartabed tarafından geniş çaplı bir restorasyona tabi tutulmuştur. Surp Giragos Kilisesi, 1881 yılında meydana gelen bir yangında harap olmuştur. Belgelerden anlaşıldığına göre kilise kazaen yanmış ve Ermeni cemaati tarafından padişahtan kilisenin tamiri için izin istenmiştir. Bu konuda şeyhülislamdan fetva istenmiş ve şeyhülislam da, “sulh yoluyla fetholunan bir beldede bulunan eski bir kilise yanmış olsa, o beldenin zimmîleri kiliseye nesne ilave etmeksizin eski haline uygun olarak tamir etmeleri dinen uygundur” şeklinde fetva vermiş ve kilisenin tamiri için padişah tarafından Ermeni cemaatine ruhsat verilmiştir. Böylece kilise, 1883 yılında yeniden inşa edilerek ibadete açılmıştır.
