İznik Kalesi’nin geçmişi M.Ö. 258 tarihlerine dayanır. İznik Kalesi’nde; sırasıyla İstanbul, Yenişehir, Lefke ve Göl kapıları bulunur. Ayrıca 12 tali kapısı vardır. Uzunluğu 4970 metredir. Yüksekliği 10-13 metre olan surların direncini güçlendirmek amacıyla 114 yuvarlak planlı burç yapılmıştır. Burçların eskileri yuvarlak, yenileri ise dört köşedir. Ayrıca surların önünde bulunan müdafaa hattında 131 burç mevcuttur. İznik surları bir çok kez tamir görmüş olup, büyük ölçüde eski kent kalıntıları surlarda kullanılmıştır. Lefke Kapısı ile İstanbul Kapısı surları üzerinde bulunan üç kabartma tasvirde M.Ö. 3'üncü yüzyıla ait bir savaşın anlatıldığı görülür.
