Van Gölü kıyısında sarp kayalar üzerinde kurulmuş olup, kesme taşlardan yapılmıştır. Azerbaycan şahlarından İran Şahı Tacettin Alişan tarafından yapılmıştır. H.940 senesinde Kanuni Sultan Süleyman tarafından kuşatılan kalenin ilk hakimi Zal Paşa’dır. İç ve dış kale olmak üzere iki kısımdan meydana gelir. 38 kulesi bulunan kalenin içinde, 70 ev ile Süleyman Han Camii, cephane mahzeni, buğday ambarları, su sarnıçları, mehterhane kulesi ve kale muhafızı anlamına gelen Dizdar’ının bulunduğu kaynaklardan anlaşılmaktadır.
