Beypazarı Living Museum, Turkey’s first applied culture museum, was founded on 23 April 2007 by educator and cultural scientist Dr. Sema Demir with the idea of exhibiting folk life and what it has produced. Serving in a typical Ottoman Period Turkish house built right at the beginning of the 20th century, the Living Museum is also, albeit on a small scale, the first example of open-air museums in Turkey. As is known, the exhibition technique used by open-air museums is aimed at constructing context. The Living Museum, which uses various reenactment techniques and interactive exhibition methods, is also the representative of this tradition in Turkey.
Since the day it was founded, the Living Museum has organized more than 15 exhibitions and events, including “Geç Osmanlı Döneminde İlan-ı Aşklar, Gelin Kınan Kutlu Olsun, Masal Masal İçinde, Masal Yaşayan Müze İçinde, Milli Mücadelenin Kadın Kahramanları, Mitolojiden Tarihe Tufan ve Aşure,” and visitors are included in the activities. Beyond showing visitors the rich and deep-rooted culture of our past, the Living Museum gives its visitors the opportunity to practice and keep this culture alive. Here, visitors, who are at the center of the activities, learn culture actively.
