According to the Children of Israel, the name of Uzayr (a.s), who is a famous Prophet, is mentioned in the Holy Qur'an. However, according to Islam, there is disagreement as to whether he was a prophet or not. Scholars also have different interpretations regarding the name of Uzayr (a.s). According to some scholars, his name is an Arabic name. According to some other scholars, however, the word Uzayr is not Arabic, but Hebrew. (al-Ukbarī, imlau ma menne bihi'r Rahman, Egypt, 1961, II, 7).

In Hebrew, the equivalent of the word Uzayr is "Azra". It appears this way in the Torah's copy in this language (Biblio Hobraica, nsr. Rud. Kittel, Stuttgart,1952; Ezra, VII,1; Nehemio, VIII,13). Uzayr (a.s) is descended from Prophet Harun (es-Sa'lebî, el-Arais, Egypt, 1951, 344). The story of Prophet Üzeyir, whose name is explicitly mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah 9/30, 31, is clearly told in Surah Al-Baqarah (Verse 259). According to some narrations, the place is a maqam, and according to some narrations, it is a tomb, and the possibility of it being a tomb is quite high.

The existence of stones that are still seen today in the shape of barley and never run out is accepted as a sign of this person's miracle. A verse said to be related to Uzayr (a.s) is as follows; "Or have you not seen the one who passed by a deserted town whose roofs had collapsed upon its walls (it had become ruined and desolate). He said, 'How will Allah bring these to life after their death?' Allah immediately caused him to die and then brought him back to life after a hundred years. He said, 'How long have you remained here?' He said, 'A day or part of a day.' Allah said to him: 'On the contrary, you have remained a hundred years. Look at your food and your drink; they have not spoiled yet. And look at your donkey. So that We may make you a sign (a lesson) for people (We kept you dead for a hundred years and then brought you back to life). Now look at the bones, how We put them together and then clothe them with flesh,' He said. When the matter became clear to him, he said, 'I must know that Allah is surely capable of all things.'" (Al-Baqarah, 2/259).

Whether he was a prophet or not, Uzayr (a.s) was a person who believed in Allah in the fullest sense, mature and possessed of faith. Throughout his life, he hastened to good deeds in order to gain Allah's pleasure. He also invited the people around him to believe in this way and to observe Allah's commands and prohibitions.
