Erdemli Vadisi

Erdemli, located to the west of the Niğde-Kayseri road, is 4 kilometres north of Yeşilhisar and 65 kilometres from Kayseri. Erdemli Vadisi, located within the borders of Erdemli Köyü in the Yeşilhisar district of Kayseri, is a canyon-shaped valley formed as a result of river erosion of the lava erupted when Erciyes Dağı was an active volcano. Its distance from Kayseri city centre is 69 kilometres. In Erdemli Köyü, in Erdemli Vadi, there are monasteries, churches and rock-cut spaces in dazzling nature. The approximate length of Erdemli Vadisi is 10 kilometres. In the settlement area stretching along Edemli Vadisi, there are eleven churches containing wall paintings. These churches are Kilise Camisi, H. Eustathios Kilisesi, H. Nikolaos Kilisesi ve Şapeli, Mikhael Kilisesi, Oniki Havari Kilisesi, Kırk Martir Kilisesi, Tek Nefli Kilise, Saray Manastırı Kilisesi and Ayı Kilisesi. Scenes on the subjects of the Bible and the Torah are depicted in the wall paintings. In addition, single figures such as saints, female saints, martyrs, bishops, angels and apostles were also painted together with some floral and geometric decorations. The structures can be dated to between the 10th and 13th centuries according to the style, iconographic features and distribution within the church of the wall paintings together with the architecture.
