Çandarlı, one of the oldest settlements in the region, is located on the İzmir-Bergama highway. The castle, built by Genoese knights, is one of the best-preserved castles in Turkey. It can be seen that stones remaining from the Hellenistic Age walls were used in the castle. The castle was restored in the 13th-14th centuries by the famous grand vizier Çandarlı Halil Paşa. During his time as grand vizier, Çandarlı Halil Paşa had the decrepit castle of the famous city of Pitane, remaining from the Genoese, rebuilt and made the city prosperous. He had stone blocks and foundation buttresses built so that it would be resistant to the newly invented cannon fire. Thus, Çandarlı Castle became solid and well-protected. Since that time, the name Pitane was replaced by Çandarlı. In other words, Halil Paşa is the one who gave Çandarlı its name. Çandarlı Castle, whose plan is in the form of a rectangle close to a square, is today quite magnificent with its five towers, embrasures, gate and walls.
