Patara kumsalı, çevredeki kumsalların en uzunu ve en görkemlisidir. 12 km uzunluğundaki kumsalın derinliği yer yer 200-300 metreye ulaşır. Kumu incedir. Deniz ise sığdır. Hemen hemen hiç durmayan rüzgarı nedeniyle rüzgar sörfü için de uygundur. Patara kumsalı deniz kaplumbağalarının (Caretta caretta) yumurta bıraktıkları yerler arasında bulunduğu için koruma altındadır. Patara plajından içeriye, antik kente, rüzgarla taşınan kumulların önüne geçilebilmesi için setler oluşturulmuştur.
